The St. Cloud Police SWAT team currently consists of 16 police officers and a SWAT Medic that provides specialized services in support of the St. Cloud Police Department's mission. The main goal of the St. Cloud Police Department's SWAT team is to save lives and provide protection and safety for innocent civilians and police personnel. To that end, it is SWAT's responsibility to respond to barricaded persons, hostage situations, emotionally disturbed persons who pose a threat to the community, active shooter incidents and any other situations which require a higher level of response than the patrol division can provide.
The SWAT team is supported by the St. Cloud Police Department's Emergency Services Unit which provides technical support as well as drivers who are specially trained to operate various SWAT support vehicles; both teams report to the Special Operations Commander. Every SWAT operator has a primary duty in the St. Cloud Police Department, such as; a patrol officer, school resource officer, detective, motorcycle officer, etc. The officer's assignment to the SWAT team is voluntary and is an additional responsibility to their normal duties. All members of the the team are trained in the use of special weapons and tactics which are utilized in various capacities which could include: inner perimeter security, building entry, suspect apprehension, dignitary protection details, high risk search and arrest warrants, as well as any special assignment from the Chief of Police.
