City of St. Cloud Declares State of Emergency

After an emergency City Council meeting Monday, the City of St. Cloud has declared a State of Emergency, in order to continue to effectively address the changing dynamics of COVID-19, also known as coronavirus.

This decision falls in line with Gov. Ron DeSantis placing Florida under a state of emergency and Osceola County following suit. The World Health Organization has characterized the outbreak of COVID-19 as a public health emergency of international concern.

The purpose of taking this step is to make it possible for the City to respond to and deliver recovery and response activities necessary to aid and protect the citizens of St. Cloud, explained City Manager William Sturgeon. Sturgeon said the declaration will stay in effect until further notice.

The City has also suspended and cancelled a variety of city-managed events that were open to the public. Once this emergency has subsided, the City will review rescheduling.

“These are the necessary steps that will help us protect our residents. We are working in tandem with Osceola County and our neighbor, the City of Kissimmee,” Sturgeon added. “We will get through this; we have to take this a day at a time.”

“When this public health crisis ends, we will certainly resume our normal practice of hosting events for our citizens,” Sturgeon said. “For now, we are solely focused on contributing in every way possible to keeping everyone safe. We just ask for continued patience from the public.”
